Dream
Carefully
(Published 1995)
Watch for
the dragon
scales of virtual reality
alternate existence assigned
at the ass end of the mind
watch for the fire it issues
dream carefully with eyes wide
on the inner space to view
interactive with vulnerable brain tissue
watch for the dragon
wings of microchip sight
it's flames engulf reality
what is real & what's insanity.
|
Butterfly
Ethereal
flowers decorate the fragrant air
of gardens blessed with a presence so fair
wings of beauty & darting surprise
natures flight of fancy on the rise
with vibrant flashes of unusual fragility
miniature miracles of regenerative ability
painted delightfuls hurry before they yield
to fill the skies of a wild sun kissed field.

Cat
& Mouse
There's a
mouse in the house brought in by the cat
and it squeaks as a paw blocks the path it would run
"a house cat has no need to eat me
I have a family who depend on me
Oh please be slow let me go"
"what will be,will be" purrs the cat
"it is within my nature to play
you are a mouse & are my prey
and to know that it distresses you so
to see you squirm & hear you beg
though it can be hard for me to say
I find I like it all the better that way"
the mouse angered as the cat grinned
so he searched for a way to go
with a shout that took the cat aback
the cat the little mouse did attack
in that moment he was gone
as fast as any mouse can run
but the cat swiped him with her claw
and pinned him to the kitchen floor
the mouse pulled at her whiskers
he tried to bite & chew her ear
she hissed "you have the heart of a rat"
he spat "do your worst you bastard cat"
the cat never brought a mouse in the house
she never again blocked the path it would run
she never again ate a mouse or a rat
I never again saw her do that.

The
Vision
The loch
reflects the rusting mountains far above
where forgotten gods reside just beneath the sky
cloud of thunderous promise is broken by the sun
the light that battles through believes it can be done
a ray succeeds and like the spotlight on a stage
displays silver dust careering down a handmade path
scattered by a wilful unnamed goddess from on high
it disappears as does the ray behind an ever blackening sky.

The Expulsion
from Eden
The world
wasn't all it could be
and the angels couldn't see
no society in a perfect world
potential was picked from a tree.
As god's laboratory mice
safe in the bosom of paradise
wisdom couldn't be learned
temptation was just a device.
A snakes seduction was no attack
humanity had to turn it's back
no possible perception of bright
without experiencing the black.
From imperfection shined delight
opened the eyes to true sight
without seeing the wrong
how could we recognise the right.
Spurred on by love and never cruelty
opening our eyes to life's beauty
god chased us from Eden
the angels graveyard of purity.
|
You
Want Microchips With That?
A world of
digitally remastered imagery
where people order on touch sensitive TV
multimedia dinners wash down biotechnology
somewhere along the line we lost our humanity
steel & glass monsters angels can't see
so high artificial light is a permanency
golden wings are pawned for interactive CD
the only way to survive the land of the free
a wingless angels sentence is virtual reality
a far better place were all wish to be.
|
Above
the Clouds
The sun
like a golden orb glows so high & wide
finding in a rainbow the castles of wizards & kings
illuminated vapour cities revealing streets of gold
the blacksmith Thor moulds stories too long ago told
creating flashing lightning rods for the up & coming storm
before the unicorn a jury of saints listen while a mermaid sings
as ancient & modern gods argue in the courtroom of purest light
who is real or fable, to whom the mortals will pray this night.
|
View
from the train
As a spectacular testament to the airs decay
flight of fancy is on its way
lilac and pink streak the still blue
with a perpetually darkening hue
imagination knows were to go
as the tar stained moon sits low
a spotlight in the early evening sky
night leaks blackness by & by
reason can't provide the answers
as we sight fishing boat monsters
surprised by a mud flat sea
nothing is as it should be
magic illuminates the night
and is promptly drowned by electric light.
|
Metal
Giants
With the
miracle of electric light
that keeps us from the darkest night
skeletal forms stride across the lands
with lines of power in their hands
reaching up through the cloud
covering the isolated like a shroud
secure among the trees & stone
they brave the elements all alone
in plenty of soon forgotten years
will we remember the ancient fears
when monuments to technology stand
metal giants that march across the land.
|
Candlelight
(Published & recorded 2001)
Flickering
flame a solitary light
cutting through the fearful night
the fragile impermanence of wick
remoulding features turning colours sick
with threats from unseen forces
springing shadows with unheard voices
a world half seen when logic softens
half understood adrenalin blossoms
what creative illumination this
the dark imagination's nemesis.

Doors
From a
freshly laid tomb
on my way to the womb
I came to many floors
each a corridor of doors
with others on their way
on the way to their birthday
each door a different path
every door a different wrath
I knew I had to choose
what face I was to use
on to the longest queue
but what would I have to do
for the door to self destruction
I joined the next in conjunction
brash & full of illusion
that led to a life of delusion
I passed many doors
so many doors on too many floors
there were the grand & gold
the plain & the very old
covering every possible sin
& every place you might begin
I saw the shabbiest door so small
it had no one in line at all
that was the door that lead to truth
that I chose that path I have no proof
I think I probably walked away
choosing a lesser challenge that day.

Natures
Peace
With the
dawn comes bewilderment
emptiness replenished with sight
the joy of simple sunlight
a caress from a raindrop
awakens the bliss to be alive
recaptures passion to survive
with a void of tranquillity
when the glory of day is done
witness the descending of the sun
shining amongst a blanket of stars
sensual lunar with her milky ray
soothes the raw wounds of the day
a magnificent friend in the night
forever pleasant dreamtime make
the full of wonderment stay awake.
|
Dream
I live in times that have never been
with fantasies the id chases
I dream of faces never seen
those ever changing faces
lives that might have been
seen in alternative places.
When hopes & fears scheme
reason blinded by egos sight
not reality just a dream
the brainstorms inner flight
it's not what it may seem
as it soars through the night.
|
Smash
Palace
Sprockets
& doors lying in corners
wheels & gaskets hang on the wall
with festering sores of rust left to grow
they were needed & loved too long ago
now just the old & discarded corpse
the tractor that once ploughed the fields
and a harvester that gathered the corn
the baby carriage sits battered & torn
an abattoir of dismembered vehicles
while trikes & bikes once proudly given
lay rusting lonely for the much ridden day
and the bonnie child who would play
someone's first car sits in the grass
recounting the times he was polished
anything to avoid how he was left so scarred
he relives good times before the wreckers yard.
|
Eviction
The earth
is so thirsty
it claws from the sky
the doom laden clouds
that float nearby
it beats them
till they cry
but they cry poisoned tears
dusty & dry
the ape burned the earth
scorching the sky
pissed in the water
all for a lie
fed the vulture
letting everything die
sending its soot
to choke up the sky
what race for profit
lets itself die
serving an eviction notice
the earth wonders why.
|
The
Old Hospital
Scent of
death & disinfectant
a pounced assault upon the senses
memories of all stick to each corridor
longer than the ageing paint that peels
they've seen it all the birth of many
the fast & slow demise of more
broken bones & hearts not healed
those cries of pain & woe linger
reverberate knocking on every door
too many momentous moments
haunting the very bricks & mortar
so much joy & sorrow felt before
the building itself sighs & weeps
creaking its requiem & lullaby
every brick seems to implore, no more.
|
Under the Sea
Did you know that under the sea
the world isn't what we expect it to be
it isn't wet like what you've heard
you can fly just like a bird
under the sea is a beautiful place
with so many colours to embrace
there's a barber shop were fish do groom
shells and rocks were plants rent a room
under the sea the whales do sing
dolphins click with the fish on the wing
the oyster makes pearls within its shell
sounds like a magical spell
yet its all from a grain of sand
under the sea is a wonderous land.
|
Season
Through an
imperfect milky velvet cloud
that descends upon the land like a shroud
leaks through the mist a shaft of white light
the patchwork country is a beautiful sight
stitched with threads of copper & gold
hugging a shivering land as winter takes hold
as the icy glow of frost fringes the scene
the sun retreats to the space in between
too far to warm the ground beneath
surrendering to the desolation of grief
until the cold shadow of winter has passed
and the jade hues of renewal are here at last.
|
Time
& the Overcoat
The
overcoat hangs in a closet
as time marches along the track
now as grey as it once was black
patched & faded left unwanted
hidden away now stained & torn
the overcoat will never again be worn
discarded for another clean & new
forgotten like so many others before
it hangs inside that closet door.
|
The 'I Am'
The I Am is a friend of mine
that no one else can see
he tells me lots of stories
of his other friends like me
who live in far away places
and across the big blue sea
maybe you can be a friend of his
like he is a friend to me
and you and I can share the stories
that the I Am shared with me.
|
Walking with the I Am
When I walk with the I Am
what do I see?
I see parks and jungles
wide open plains,
deserts with the odd tree
I see lizards and snakes
brightly coloured toads
homes in treetops
snails with their own slime roads
beavers in construction hats
homes under the sea
cloth homes and tin homes
for people just like me
I see kangaroos and koalas
while the kookaburra laughs
tigers, chimps and orang-utans
taking nice warm lake baths
I see polar bears and penguins
fishing through the ice
the lion and the zebra
in the grasslands so nice
I see pussycats and dogs
licking their owners hands
the fox and the hound
running across the farmlands
when I walk with the I Am
the world is a nice place to see
to make it last forever
is up to you and me.
|
Trees and Plants
The I Am spoke at length to me
about the lands across the sea
where I could find rubber trees
that bounce upon the breeze
told me of things I could not believe
plants that eats insects inside a slippery sleeve
a plant that's a trap that even snaps shut
a tree that makes a spiky coat for it's nut
of an oil that springs from a leafs palm
of trees which look like silver whose scent is a balm
the tree with long leaves that weeps into the brook
the I Am told me one day I should take a look
take more than a glance
at a world filled with the wonder of plants.
|
I Am and Me
I am is a lot like me
I am enjoys the sea
the natural rhythm of surf and sand
I am no longer enjoys the land
I am enjoys a sail in a boat
I am likes to stay afloat
because I am likes the land no more
I am won't stray far from shore
but I am likes to climb a tree
to see what I am can see
away from the city the noise is gone
I am looks to the horizon
I am wears a protective coat
pretending the sea is a moat
I am likes to be at sea
I am is a lot like me.
|
Place
There is a wild and wonderous place
where everyone has a happy face
and all they like to do is race
there's so much space in this beautiful place
there can be wild fields of bright blue grass
or big tall walls of shining glass
such joy down the phone all alone enmass
no difference between any lad or lass
me and the I am we will let it pass
for in this glorious glittering place
were everyone so likes to race and
chase
me and the I am, we can't keep pace
there's too much that's elastic in cyberspace.
|
The
Watchers
In the dark
unclosed closet
lying in wait under the bed
the feeling of being followed
that you thinks just in your head
the shot of cold through the soul
only caused by the winters chill
reading stories of ghosts with a smile
choosing scary movies for the thrill
beyond it all they watch you with envy
wandering lost & full of confusion
they witness lives passing too quickly
wonder if it's some kind of delusion
impotent they watch & try to touch
unfelt except maybe that unexplained chill
the house cools down at night they are unheard
waiting to have an effect on on you but they never will
their time has passed so they watch & wait
and feel the loneliness of the unseen
forever slipping through dimensions
grieving for life's glimpses in between.

Waiting
for the train
She stands on the platform
the wind cuts like a knife
it's the end of the battle
she's not scared of the night
it's the journey she's taking
with no future in sight
She made too many choices
that shouldn't have been made
regrets aren't part of tomorrow
the price has already been paid
this time destiny cannot be cheated
the track has already been laid
standing on the platform
she forgets all the pain
nothing will be like tomorrow
in that unknown place
at the end of the line
all the living must face.
